O.K. Video - biannual Jakarta International Video Festival that was established in 2003 by ruangrupa, an artists' initiative based in Jakarta that focuses on supporting the development of the arts in the specific context of culture in Indonesia through research, study and documentation, along with intensive collaboration and cooperation with artists through organizing exhibitions, artist residency programs, art projects and workshops.
OK.Video - Jakarta Internasional Video Festival, sebuah kegiatan dua tahunan dimulai pada 2003 oleh ruangrupa, sebuah organisasi seniman yang berlokasi di Jakarta yang memfokuskan diri pada dukungan perkembangan seni pada konteks spesifik budaya Indonesia melalui riset, studi dan dokumentasi, bersamaan dengan kolaborasi dan kerjasama yang intensif dengan seniman melalui pameran, program artists residency, art project dan workshop.

MILITIA! SAATNYA BERGERAK!
The term militia means to arm a group of people in an armed movement to alter and seize power. But, militia also means to empower civilians in an organized, well planned manner and mobilize them for the sake of change whose beginning should take place within us all.
Kata militia (milisi --dalam bahasa Indonesia) berarti mempersenjatai sekelompok orang untuk melakukan gerakan bersenjata demi mengubah dan merebut kekuasaan. Namun milisi juga berarti memberdayakan masyarakat sipil secara terorganisir, terencana, juga termobilisasi demi perubahan yang terinisiasi dari dalam diri.
In OK. Video Militia - 3rd Jakarta International Video Festival 2007, 'to arm' means to give opportunity to the public to use a video (camera) to challenge the hegemony of the audio-visual language. This is connected to the development of the video medium within the society, inviting the people as technology-and media-users to join us in building awareness of social issues that are taking place.
Dalam OK. Video Militia - 3rd Jakarta International Video Festival 2007, mempersenjatai berarti memberikan kesempatan pada masyarakat untuk menggunakan video (kamera) demi melawan hegemoni bahasa audio-visual. Hal ini terkait dengan perkembangan medium video di masyarakat, mengajak mereka sebagai pengguna teknologi dan media untuk turut membangun kesadaran sosial yang terjadi.
We believe that the audio-visual media can become a departure point in developing our many questions; questions regarding social, political, and cultural issues as a start in a creative process, also regarding our awareness toward technology and media which in actuality can have social and cultural functions. To produce truth, reality, and our own history, starting from independent initiatives.
Kami percaya bahwa audio-visual dapat menjadi titik berangkat untuk mengembangkan berbagai pertanyaan kita. Pertanyaan yang berhubungan dengan persoalan sosial, politik, dan budaya sebagai awal dalam proses kreatif. Juga mengenai kesadaran kita terhadap teknologi dan media yang sebenarnya dapat berfungsi sosial dan budaya. Memproduksi kebenaran, kenyataan, dan sejarah kita sendiri, dari inisiatif yang mandiri.
Based on that idea, OK. Video Militia - 3rd Jakarta International Video Festival 2007 develops video workshops in fifteen locations in twelve cities. Inviting the people to be more active in productively using the power of video as a 'tool', and able to put video, media and technological awareness critically in its local context. Currently, easy access of audio-visual technology is a starting point for a collective learning, that nothing is singular, that all things can offer diverse choices. From this diversity, we expect the tradition of critical thinking to thrive.
Dari pikiran tersebut, OK. Video Militia - 3rd Jakarta International Video Festival 2007 mengembangkan workshop video di 15 tempat di 12 kota. Mengajak mereka untuk lebih aktif menggunakan kekuatan video sebagai 'alat' secara produktif, dan mampu menempatkan kesadaran video, media, dan teknologi, secara kritis dalam konteks lokalnya. Saat ini, kemudahan dalam mengakses teknologi audio-visual adalah modal awal untuk pembelajaran bersama, bahwa segala sesuatu tidaklah tunggal, melainkan mampu menjadi suatu pilihan yang beragam. Dari keberagaman ini, diharapkan budaya kritis, dapat hidup.
The numerous videos in this festival, from Indonesia or abroad, have social-political and cultural contents that can clearly be seen. These videos present various changes, evolutive or revolutive, from the people and many other fields --politics, war, military, religion, economy, urban, and domestic spaces (families)-- without a narrative language. With its own language, these videos are here as 'signs' building their own history within the society.
Melihat berbagai video dalam festival ini, baik dari luar negeri maupun Indonesia, muatan sosial-politik dan budaya sangat jelas terlihat. Sekian video ini menampilkan berbagai perubahan, baik yang bersifat evolutif maupun revolutif, dari masyarakat dan berbagai bidang lainnya --politik, perang, militer, agama, ekonomi, kota, dan ruang-ruang domestik (keluarga) --tanpa bahasa yang naratif. Dengan bahasanya sendiri, video-video ini hadir sebagai ‘tanda’ yang membangun sejarahnya sendiri dalam masyarakat.
In OK. Video Militia - 3rd Jakarta International Video Festival 2007, we present a new approach. A curatorial work developed from the collaboration between the artistic team and the community, to find a concept suitable with the context of community, public, and with specific public spaces. A presentation space has its own character and history. Therefore, the video makers are asked to focus on the concept of a local space as the beginning of a creative process, by choosing and review the heart of the matter in different places.
Dalam OK. Video Militia - 3rd Jakarta International Video Festival 2007, kami menghadirkan sebuah pendekatan baru. Kerja kuratorial dikembangkan dari sebuah kerja-bersama antara tim artistik dan komunitas, demi menemukan sebuah konsep yang sesuai dengan konteks komunitas, khalayak, dan ruang-ruang khalayak yang spesifik. Sebuah ruang presentasi memiliki karakter dan sejarahnya sendiri. Karena itu, para pembuat video diajak untuk fokus pada konsep ruang lokal sebagai awal proses kreatif, dengan memilih, dan melihat-kembali inti persoalan pada tempat-tempat yang berbeda.
The first program of this festival is VIDEO IN, located at the Galeri Nasional Indonesia and divided into two main rooms. The first room, is the presentation of the results of workshops done in collaborations with the community/society in fifteen locations in twelve cities, presenting more than 100 video works. The second room, presenting video works, from invitations, work applications, and works by groups/communities (from Indonesia and abroad) that have been working and creating using the video medium. In VIDEO IN, this festival tries to present maps and developments of videos initiated by artists, groups, and art-culture communities in various Indonesian regions. Here the video medium becomes an alternative in the mission to empower the people to make social changes. Presented also are international video works, chosen based on how these works 'record' and 'speak' critically, by means of the audiovisual media, about social-cultural issues taking place in different parts of the globe.
Program pertama festival ini adalah VIDEO IN, bertempat di Galeri Nasional Indonesia dan terbagi dalam dua Ruang utama. Ruang pertama, berupa presentasi karya-karya workshop yang telah dilakukan bersama komunitas/masyarakat di 15 tempat di 12 kota, dan menghadirkan lebih dari seratus karya video. Ruang Kedua, menghadirkan karya-karya video, baik hasil undangan, aplikasi karya, serta dari kelompok/komunitas (internasional dan Indonesia) yang selama ini bekerja dan berkarya dengan medium video. Dalam VIDEO IN, festival ini mencoba menghadirkan peta dan perkembangan video yang dimotori oleh para seniman, kelompok, maupun komunitas seni-budaya diberbagai wilayah Indonesia. Di mana medium video menjadi pilihan lain dalam misi pemberdayaan masyarakat terhadap perubahan sosial. Dihadirkan pula karya video internasional yang dipilih berdasarkan pada bagaimana karya-karya tersebut ‘merekam’ dan bicara’ melalui audio-visual mengenai persoalan sosial-budaya dengan tendensi kritisnya yang terjadi di berbagai belahan dunia.
The second program of the festival is VIDEO OUT, a program that puts video in public spaces, such as offices, cafes, malls, and train stations. The specification of the works is adjusted to the character of the space. For that, the video makers are invited to understand the character of the space, along with the specific characteristics of the public. The works will be presented in a window display in cafes, shopping centers, and malls. Then, there will also be video boxes, set in offices and train stations. The works displayed there have been selected from the ones sent to us by artists from Indonesia and abroad.
Program kedua festival ini adalah VIDEO OUT. Sebuah program yang memasukkan video ke ruang-ruang khalayak, berupa perkantoran, kafe, mall, dan stasiun kereta. Spesifikasi video disesuaikan dengan karakter ruang tayangan. Untuk itu, pembuat video diajak untuk memahami karakter ruang tayangan, berikut karakter spesifik dari pemirsa dan khalayaknya. Bentuk presentasi berupa window display video di kafe, pertokoan, dan mall. Kemudian, ada pula video box yang ditayangkan di perkantoran dan stasiun kereta. Karya-karya ini adalah hasil seleksi dari kiriman aplikasi, baik dari Indonesia maupun internasional.
We believe it is time for the 'broadcasts' to enter the public spaces, presented as part of a particular space, where the audience is captured and trapped into watching a different broadcast unlike anything generally found in that location. Nowadays, domination of audiovisual broadcasts such as film/cinema has migrated from special and exclusive locations to publicly accessible locations, experimentative locations that are more fluid. The mass media, such as television, are included here. OK. Video tries to start moving into this region, with the idea that the process will take place in which the broadcast messages might compete in seizing the audience, as we go and approach the public.
Kami berpendapat, sudah saatnya 'tayangan' masuk ke ruang khalayak, dihadirkan sebagai bagian dari ruang tersebut, dimana pemirsa ditangkap dan dijebak untuk menonton tayangan berbeda yang tidak biasanya ditemukan di tempat tersebut. Saat ini, dominasi tayangan seperti film/sinema dalam audio-visual telah bergeser dari tempat-tempat khusus dan eksklusif ke tempat-tempat yang mudah dicapai oleh khalayak, yaitu tempat yang lebih eksperimentatif dengan performa lebih cair. Media massa, seperti televisi, termasuk di dalamnya. OK. Video mencoba untuk mulai bergerak ke wilayah ini, dengan pemikiran bahwa proses perebutan pesan dengan modifikasi yang beragam dapat terjadi, saat kita mendatangi sesama khalayak.
Much effort is needed to build the awareness toward change, inspired by the society itself. We will never be able to survive by staying still. This time we have to record our own history, starting with something different from the mainstream. It's time to find comrades-in-arms who are willing to move and aware of the need to make changes.
Diperlukan usaha untuk membangun kesadaran demi perubahan, yang terinspirasi dari masyarakat sendiri. Kita tidak akan pernah bisa bertahan dalam posisi diam. Saat inilah kita perlu merekam sejarah kita sendiri. Memulai dengan sesuatu yang berbeda dengan arus besar. Saatnya kita menemukan kawan yang mau bergerak dan sadar untuk melakukan perubahan.

In this 3rd OK.Video Festival, we will try to develop a collaboration work between the artistic team of the festival with the participating artists or with the context of a certain public space. This collaboration work will try to get an artistic strategy that could be fit with the context of the community, public and certain space. The theme of the 3rd Ok. Video Festival is "MILITIA", means to empowered the civilians in a more organize way or by plan so it also mobilize and connected with some activity that push some changes which is initiated from itself. In this context, we relate this theme with the development of video as the medium in the society today. With this focus we will try to empower the society as a technology and media user to build a social, political, cultural, and historical consciousness towards the reality that happened in our surroundings.
OK.Video Festival yang ketiga ini mengangkat tema "MILITIA" (Milisi - dalam bahasa Indonesia), sebuah kata yang berarti memberdayakan masyarakat sipil secara terorganisir / terencana juga termobilisasi dan berhubungan dengan sebuah kegiatan yang mendorong sebuah perubahan yang terpicu dari dalam sendiri. Dalam konteks ini tentu kita menghubungkannya dengan perkembangan medium video di masyarakat.
With MILITIA, as the theme of this year festival, the festival will be showing video works that have this kind of tendencies:
- playing or questioning video/audio technology in our daily life such as video camera, digital camera, videophone, computer, television, surveillance camera, etc
- investigation, which is raise a social, political and cultural issue or situation that happened in our surroundings
- video exploration, as a strategy to empower the society such as community video
- presenting history with personal point of view
- showing personal experience or society in the daily life with video diary or testimony
Dengan tema MILITIA, festival video ini akan memperlihatkan karya-karya video yang memiliki kecenderungan:
- bermain-main atau mempertanyakan teknologi video / audio visual sehari-hari seperti kamera video, foto digital, video handphone, komputer, kamera pengintai, televisi dan lain-lain
- investigasi yang mengangkat isu atau situasi sosial, politik, dan budaya yang terjadi di sekeliling kita
- eksplorasi video sebagai cara pemberdayaan masyarakat seperti video komunitas
- menghadirkan sejarah melalui sudut pandang pribadi
- mengungkapkan pengalaman pribadi atau keseharian masyarakat melalui video diary atau berupa testimoni

[TV Scratching is the program title for a video work form that have been created or made from audiovisual footage/images taken or recorded from the TV programme. This video works will became a new audiovisual interpretation or audiences' answer/statement towards TV culture.
It's possible with any kind of editing technique, image manipulation with analog or digital, and it's also possible to do a direct editing by zapping TV's remote control.
The video works that will be shown in this program is a selection from the video works submissions. The video works will be shown in one video compilation with one projection.]

The aim is to give an alternative moving image in the public space that have been dominated by commercial images, by showing moving images with art and cultural content; video screening on TV at the window display in corporation with office building, café, bookstore, restaurant and cultural center

The special screening of OK. Video Militia - 3rd Jakarta International Video Festival at the Kineforum, Ismail Marzuki Cultural Park, is one of the event's special programs, presenting international video works and results of the ruangrupa's workshops in fifteen points in twelve Indonesian cities. The program presents video works in a cinema, a darkened room that generally show film works with specific characteristics. In this program, ruangrupa tries to give you a different viewing experience, presenting video works that had not been meant to be presented in a cinema setting.
Pemutaran khusus OK. Video Militia - 3rd Jakarta International Video Festival di Kineforum - Taman Ismail Marzuki merupakan salah satu program khusus yang menampilkan karya-karya video internasional dan hasil workshop ruangrupa dari limabelas titik di duabelas kota di Indonesia. Program ini menghadirkan karya-karya video di ruang sinema, ruang gelap yang biasanya menampilkan karya-karya film dengan sifatnya yang khusus. Dalam program ini, ruangrupa mencoba memberikan pengalaman menonton yang berbeda, yaitu menghadirkan karya-karya video yang pada awalnya tidak dimaksudkan untuk dihadirkan di sinema.
The presence of video works in a cinema is an effort to re-view how far video and film works are different from each other. In the contemporary film developments, the distance between the two is becoming even shorter. What makes them differ is merely the venue where they are presented, i.e. the cinema, an exhibition space, and public spaces. This has been proven true in this screening program at Kineforum, where some of the works are winners in important international film festivals; the examples are Man, Road, River by Marcellus L from Brazil, which won the Grand Prize at the International Film Festival in Oberhausen, Germany, 2005; and Even If She Had Been a Criminal by Jean-Gabriel Periot from France, which won the Grand Prize of the International Short Film Festival, Tampere, Finland, 2006. Almost all of the other international works have also been included in important international film festivals, in international competitions or special programs. Aside from it, the works have been presented in important video and new media exhibitions in various countries.
Kehadiran karya-karya video di sinema ini merupakan upaya melihat kembali sejauh mana irisan yang dapat mempertemukan karya video dan film. Dalam perkembangan film dunia kontemporer, irisan ini sudah semakin tipis. Karya-karya film eksperimental, film pendek, dokumenter dan karya video semakin tidak ada jarak. Yang membedakannya hanya tempat presentasi yaitu sinema, ruang pameran, dan ruang publik. Ini terbukti dalam program tayangan di Kineforum, di mana beberapa karya merupakan karya pemenang utama di festival film dunia yang sangat penting, misalnya Man, Road, River karya Marcellus L dari Brasil adalah pemenang Grand Prize International Short Film Festival Oberhausen-Jerman 2005. Kemudian, Even If She Had Been a Criminal karya Jean-Gabriel Periot dari Prancis adalah pemenang Grand Prize International Short Film Festival Tampere-Finlandia 2006. Karya-karya internasional lainnya hampir seluruhnya pernah masuk dalam festival-festival film penting di dunia dalam kompetisi internasional maupun program khusus. Special program at Kineforum is divided into seven compilations; the first one, "Space, Society, and History", presents works recording problems of the society related to their own space (site) and history.
Program khusus di Kineforum terbagi dalam tujuh bagian kompilasi; kompilasi pertama, "Ruang, Masyarakat, dan Sejarah", menampilkan karya-karya yang merekam persoalan-persoalan masyarakat yang berhubungan dengan ruang (situs) dan sejarah mereka sendiri.
The second compilation, "Image Capture and Documentation", presents six video works of the French artist Jean-Gabriel Periot. In the past few years, the artist have been working compiling the various images recorded by the people, whether they are still images or moving ones, and re-presenting them as sociopolitical problems with personal perspectives.
Kompilasi kedua "Tangkapan Citra dan Pendokumentasian" menampilkan enam karya video seniman Prancis Jean-Gabriel Periot. Seniman ini beberapa tahun terakhir berkarya dengan mengumpulkan berbagai macam visual yang direkam oleh masyarakat, baik yang bergerak maupun diam, dan dihadirkan kembali dengan persoalan-persoalan sosial-politik dengan perspektif personal.
The third compilation, "Identity and Mass Media", presents one video work from Indonesia and two from abroad. The works try to record and reassess the strength of the media in viewing identity.
Kompilasi ketiga, "Indentitas dan Media Massa", menampilkan satu karya video dari Indonesia dan dua dari luar Indonesia. Karya-karya ini mencoba merekam dan mempertanyakan kembali kekuatan media dalam melihat identitas.
The fourth compilation, "The Beautiful World", presents two works: My Sneaker, a video essay by Michael Blum from Germany, and Beautiful World by Mieke Gerritzen from The Netherlands. My Sneaker is a production of ruangrupa in 2002, during Michael Blum's residency program at the ruangrupa in Jakarta. The video traces the phrase "Made in Indonesia" found in the artist's shoes, which he bought in Paris. The work has also been presented in installation format in various exhibitions in many countries. Meanwhile, Beautiful World is an ingenious criticism about the contemporary world using text as visual elements.
Kompilasi keempat, "Indahnya Dunia", menampilkan dua karya yaitu My Sneaker karya video esai Michael Blum dari Jerman dan Beautiful World karya Mieke Gerritzen dari Belanda. My Sneaker merupakan produksi ruangrupa pada 2002 saat Michael Blum melakukan residensi di ruangrupa, Jakarta. Video ini menelusuri kata "Made in Indonesia" yang tercantum pada sepatunya yang dibelinya di Paris. Karya ini juga dipresentasikan dalam format instalasi dalam berbagai pameran di berbagai negara. Sementara itu, Beautiful World merupakan kritik yang jenius tentang dunia kontemporer dengan menggunakan teks sebagai visual.
The fifth compilation, "Bureaucracy and Public Services", presents a compilation of the works produced during the OK. Video Militia workshop. The works talk about the problems of bureaucracy and public services. The sixth compilation, "Body", consists of ten videos produced during the workshop, using the body as a window to talk about the socio-cultural problems. The last compilation is "Space and Society", also presenting works made during the workshop, talking about the planning (of a region) and the problems of the society.
Kompilasi kelima, "Birokrasi dan Pelayanan Publik", menampilkan kompilasi karya workshop OK. Video Militia yang berhubungan dengan persoalan birokrasi dan pelayanan publik. Kompilasi keenam, "Tubuh", terdiri atas sepuluh karya video workshop yang menjadikan tubuh sebagai salah satu pintu masuk untuk membicarakan persoalan sosial budaya. Kompilasi terakhir adalah "Ruang dan Masyarakat", juga masih menampilkan karya-karya workshop yang bicara tentang tataruang (suatu wilayah) dan persoalan kemasyakatan.
The works produced during the workshops and the works of the international artists are thus presented side by side in a special program, because the works being screened at the Kineforum today tend to be similarly critical toward the socio-cultural problems.
Demikianlah, karya-karya workshop dan karya video seniman internasional kami hadirkan bersamaan dalam program khusus, karena video-video yang hadir di Kineforum ini mempunyai tendensi kritis pada persoalan sosial budaya dengan kualitas yang sama.

Workshop OK. Video Militia
OK. Video Militia workshop has the objective to empower the people, by using the video as a medium for expression, for research, and for reflection on the social phenomena. Therefore, the workshop also develops the "quintessence" of each city and town where the workshop is held. We conducted simple researches about the places, regarding the physical aspects or, especially, the socio-cultural aspects, to gain some descriptions about them. We then present the many problems we found to the participants, we re-present them --is it true what the mass media and many people have been thinking about their place of residence? We then asked the participants to explore questions that had never been posed about their environment, and we then developed these questions together and discussed how to present those questions and problems using the medium of video.
Workshop OK. Video Militia ini bertujuan memberdayakan masyarakat, dengan menggunakan video sebagai medium ekspresi, alat penyelidikan, dan refleksi atas fenomena sosial. Karena itu, workshop ini juga mengembangkan "inti karakter" setiap kota tujuan workshop. Kami melakukan penelitian sederhana mengenai kota, baik secara fisik maupun, terutama, kondisi sosial-budayanya, demi mendapatkan gambaran karakter kota itu. Berbagai permasalahan yang kami temukan kemudian kami tawarkan kepada peserta, kami sandingkan kembali --tepatkah pemberitaan media massa maupun anggapan banyak orang mengenai kota mereka? Kami lalu mengajak peserta untuk menggali sejumlah pertanyaan yang selama ini tak pernah diungkapkan tentang lingkungan mereka, lalu kami kembangkan bersama, bagaimana mengangkat ragam permasalahan itu melalui medium video.
Prior to that, we have prepared workshop modules, which we designed to be presented in seven days. The modules consist of an introduction to the history of video, its relevancy to the socio-political and cultural situations, and also about the OK. Video festival which ruangrupa holds every two years since 2003. There are also modules about the introductions to the technical aspects of the video and also about a simple editing process.
Sebelumnya, kami telah menyiapkan modul workshop yang kami rancang dalam tujuh hari pertemuan. Modul itu berupa pengenalan sejarah video, kaitannya dengan situasi sosial-politik dan budaya, hingga mengenai festival OK. Video yang dilakukan dua tahun sekali oleh ruangrupa sejak 2003, serta modul berupa pengenalan teknis video dan proses editing sederhana.
Many participants thought that to make a video work they had to be able to do some video editing using the computers, something that they still found difficult. Here we only came up with very simple editing concepts, because we preferred to develop editing concepts that are out of the technical aspects, i.e. how to develop an idea using the characteristics of the video medium. However, in some places where the participants had not been familiar with the context and technical aspects of the video medium, we presented our modules in reverse, i.e. we delivered the technical introductions first, then the theories. That was why we had to create flexible modules.
Banyak peserta yang menganggap bahwa dalam membuat karya video berarti harus mampu melakukan editing dengan komputer, hal yang masih sulit bagi mereka. Di sini, kami hanya datang membawa konsep editing yang sangat sederhana, karena kami ingin lebih mengembangkan konsep editing di luar permasalahan teknis, yaitu bagaimana mengembangkan sebuah ide dalam karakteristik medium video. Namun, untuk beberapa lokasi di mana peserta belum mengerti mengenai konteks dan teknis video, kami memberikan modul workshop secara terbalik, pengenalan teknis terlebih dahulu baru teori. Itulah sebabnya kami harus membuat modul yang fleksibel.
The interesting thing in the workshop was to see how the participants intimately play around with the videos. They tested the medium first prior to deciding whether their ideas would be suitable for, say, the camera in a mobile phone, which turned out to have such a low resolution that would be difficult to transfer; or they wondered what if they used the technique of stop-motions as a simple animation technique. They knew that each video-based recording equipment has its own characteristic that must be adapted to their ideas. Many participants then decided to collaborate to develop their ideas, and a lot of fresh new ideas emerged during the process. Many of the participants found distinct visual styles that are able to describe their cities using various approaches, whether as documentary works, simple animations, statements, or a play of visual imagination.
Hal menarik dalam workshop ini adalah bagaimana peserta bermain-main secara intim dengan video. Mencobanya terlebih dulu, sebelum memutuskan apakah konsep mereka cocok jika dikerjakan dengan, misalnya kamera telepon genggam, yang ternyata memiliki resolusi gambar yang kecil dan sulit untuk di-transfer, atau bagaimana jika karya itu dibuat dengan teknik stop-motion, sebagai bentuk animasi sederhana. Mereka tahu bahwa setiap alat rekam berbasis video memiliki karakter sendiri yang harus disesuaikan dengan ide mereka. Dan untuk mengembangkan ide-ide mereka, banyak peserta kemudian berkolaborasi, sehingga banyak terjadi hal segar dalam proses itu. Banyak dari mereka yang menemukan gaya cerita visual tersendiri, yang mampu menggambarkan karakter kota mereka dengan berbagai pendekatan, baik sebagai karya dokumenter, animasi sederhana, penyataan, maupun permainan imajinasi visual.
The participants had actually known their towns and cities very well in their daily lives, it is now just how to help them own the awareness to 'record' these cities. We challenge them to keep trying all the technical possibilities of the video using many recording media, introducing various ways of 'recording', from the simplest one like writing a daily journal, notes, sketches, up to video recording. The awareness to 'record' would be able to help them express their critical attitude in observing changes, turning them into new forms of expressions, thus enabling these participants to know and adapt better to the changes and then pose these questions again using the medium of video, which would then trigger more forms of expressions in never-ending explorations.
Para peserta sebenarnya telah mengenal kota mereka dengan baik dalam keseharian mereka, tinggal bagaimana mereka memiliki kesadaran untuk 'merekam'nya. Kami menantang mereka untuk terus mencoba segala kemungkinan teknis video dengan berbagai alat rekam, mengenalkan berbagai kemungkinan cara 'perekaman', dari yang paling sederhana seperti menulis jurnal harian, catatan kecil, coretan gambar, sampai perekaman melalui video. Kesadaran 'merekam' ini yang akan bisa menuangkan sikap kritis mereka dalam melihat perubahan menjadi bentuk ungkap yang lain, memungkinkan mereka lebih aktif dalam mengenal dan beradaptasi, lalu mempertanyakan kembali permasalahan tersebut melalui teknis video, yang nantinya akan memunculkan banyak lagi ekspresi mereka dalam sebuah eksplorasi yang baru.

As a town situated on the North Coast of Java in West Java, Cirebon is one of the most crowded area on the northern coast. It is the main trading and migration route from the eastern side of Java to Jakarta and vice-versa, causing the people to have special characteristics in terms of the social and cultural aspects due to such circulation. In the twelfth century, Cirebon was a center of distribution and an Islamic court, which had been one of the most influential courts in terms of trade. With its port, Muara Jati, Cirebon was also an important port of call in Southeast Asia. Today, Cirebon has the motto of 'Berintan', an acronym of the Indonesian phrase of 'Working Hard without Expecting Any Rewards', adapted from the traditional saying of 'rame ing gawe, sepi ing pamrih'.
Sebagai sebuah kota yang berada di pesisir Laut Jawa di Jawa Barat, Cirebon adalah salah satu wilayah terpadat di Jalur Pantura. Sebuah jalur utama perdagangan dan migrasi dari timur Jawa ke Jakarta dan sebaliknya. Sehingga masyarakatnya memiliki karateristik tersendiri dalam hal sosial-budaya akibat sirkulasi masyarakat itu. Pada abad XIII, Cirebon adalah pusat penyebaran dan kerajaan Islam di Jawa Barat. Kerajaan Islam di Cirebon pernah menjadi salah satu kerajaan yang berpengaruh bagi aktivitas perdagangan dan pelabuhan di Asia Tenggara dengan adanya Pelabuhan Muara Jati. Saat ini, motto Cirebon adalah BERINTAN -Banyak Bekerja Tanpa Mengharapkan Imbalan (Rame Ing Gawe Suci Ing Pamrih).
Workshop OK. Video Militia in Cirebon was conducted by the Gardu Unik Sinau Community, which was established in 2006. The community works in the fields of art, theater, and performance, and was founded by Nico Broer, Agus Suwanda, Mulyana Buru, and Iskandar Abenk. Most of the members are teachers, whether full time or part time. The workshop took place on May 23 to May 29, 2007, involving fourteen participants who were all active members of the Gardu Unik Sinau Community. After holding a series of discussions and video production activities, on the last day there we screened the results of the workshop in a makeshift open-air theater along the river. It was an exciting closing night as the people living in the area, government officials, cultural activists, and other art communities were also invited.
Workshop OK. Video Militia di Cirebon dilakukan di Komunitas Gardu Unik Sinau yang berdiri sejak 2006. Komunitas yang bergerak di bidang seni rupa, teater dan pertunjukan ini, didirikan oleh Nico Broer, Agus Suwanda, Mulyana Bulu dan Iskandar Abenk. Sebagian besar anggotanya adalah pengajar, baik sebagai guru tetap atau paruh waktu. Workshop berlangsung dari 23 sampai 29 Mei 2007, melibatkan empatbelas peserta yang semuanya adalah anggota aktif Komunitas Gardu Unik Sinau. Setelah melakukan serangkaian diskusi dan produksi video, pada hari terakhir diadakan pemutaran karya jadi workshop di layar tancep di pinggir kali. Sebuah penutupan yang ramai karena turut mengundang penduduk sekitar, pegawai pemerintah, aktivis kebudayaan dan komunitas seni lainnya.
Some of the works produced in the workshop are: Rasa Batu (The Sense of Stone), about the stone-cutting factory that has created air pollution; Gemah Sampah: "Lho Kok Malah Numpuk" (Waste Abound: "Gee It's Become Too Much"), a video about the final dumpster of the town of Cirebon; Mancing (Fishing), a collaborative work by two persons from Cirebon who are now working in Jakarta making soap operas; and Segara Setu Patok (The Setu Patok Lake), about the lake that the people have forgotten, accompanied by typical folksong from Cirebon, played by the video maker, portraying the cheerful interactions of the people with their lake.
Beberapa karya yang dihasilkan dalam workshop ini antara lain: Rasa Batu, sebuah karya mengenai pabrik pemotongan batu yang menghasilkan polusi udara di lingkungan sekitarnya; Gemah Sampah: "Lho Kok Malah Numpuk" video tentang tempat pembuangan sampah akhir di Cirebon; Mancing, sebuah karya kolaborasi dua pekerja sinetron asal Cirebon yang bekerja di Jakarta; dan Segara Setu Patok, sebuah video musik tentang Situ Patok yang dilupakan masyarakatnya, dengan lagu khas Cirebon-an yang dibawakan sendiri oleh pembuat video, berupa interaksi masyarakat dengan danaunya secara riang-gembira.

Depok is the supporting area of the capital city of Jakarta. Situated right on the south of Jakarta, between Jakarta and Bogor, since April 20, 1999, Depok has been designated as a municipality that is distinct from the Regency of Bogor. When it was only an administrative district in 1982, Depok had only 240,000 people, and when it became a municipality in 1999, it already housed 1.2 million people. Many of the older areas in Depok are remnants from the colonial time, and the people still living there are often called 'Depok Dutch'. These areas are being marginalized now. The economic growth of the town is thanks to its existence as an industrial and shopping area, as well as education provider. The presence of the University of Indonesia and the Gunadharma University, with such a huge number of students, make the town lives on the students-related economic activities.
Depok adalah penyangga ibu kota Jakarta. Terletak tepat di selatan Jakarta antara Jakarta-Bogor, sejak 20 April 1999, Depok ditetapkan menjadi kotamadya (sekarang: kota) yang terpisah dari Kabupaten Bogor. Ketika masih menjadi kota Administratif pada 1982, penduduknya hanya 240.000 jiwa, dan ketika sudah menjadi kotamadya pada 1999, penduduknya menjadi 1,2 juta jiwa. Banyak kawasan tua di Depok berupa peninggalan kolonial, dengan warga keturunan yang sering disebut Belanda-Depok yang masih banyak tinggal di sana, sebuah kawasan yang saat ini mulai tergusur. Gairah ekonomi di kota ini, selain sebagai kawasan industri dan pusat perbelanjaan, adalah sebagai kawasan pendidikan. Hadirnya Universitas Indonesia dan Universitas Gunadharma dengan jumlah mahasiswa yang besar, membuat kota ini hidup dari bisnis yang berkaitan dengan keperluan mahasiswa.
Workshop in Depok was held alongside with the punk community and the community of street children who like to hang out at the New Depok Station. The community called themselves 'Box House', a name that emerged during the workshop. Seven people participated in the workshop, which took place on May 15 and 16, and resumed on June 3 to June 6, 2007.
Workshop di Depok diadakan bersama komunitas punk dan anak-anak jalanan yang sering berkumpul di Stasiun Depok Baru. Komunitas ini menamakan diri Rumah Kotak, nama yang lahir saat workshop video diadakan. Workshop yang diikuti oleh tujuh orang peserta ini berlangsung mulai 15-16 Mei, dan dilanjutkan kembali 3-6 Juni 2007.
The majority of the video works resulting from the workshop talk about train-related activities. Nine of them are: Mau ke Mana? (Where're You Goin'?), Re-load, Pulang – Pergi (Coming and Going), Un-incident (arrival-departure on the train), and De-Ja-Vu; all talk about trains and the community surrounding them. Meanwhile, Sarkem (Pasar Kemiri) (Kemiri Market) talks about the life in the market and the vendors who start coming there from three in the morning. Then there is a poetic video, Choir. There is also a video about a construction from the colonial era, Djembatan Panoes "Riwayatmu Kini" (The Panoes Bridge "Your Story Thus"). Last, there is also the video Dalam Kotak, di Dalam Tralis (Within Box, in the Bars), which is a highly experimental work about the visuals and the reality. Most of the video works show the close relationship between the participants and their immediate environment: the train station.
Video-video yang dihasilkan mayoritas membicakan kegiatan yang berhubungan dengan kereta api. Sembilan karya video yang dihasilkan antara lain: Mau ke Mana?, Re-load, Pulang-Pergi; Un-incident (arrival-departure on the train) dan De-Ja-Vu, berbicara tentang kereta api dan masyarakatnya. Pada Sarkem (Pasar Kemiri), video ini berbicara tentang bagaimana keadaan pasar dan pedagangnya yang mulai hidup dari jam tiga pagi. Kemudian ada video yang puitik, yaitu Choir. Ada pula video mengenai bangunan sisa-sisa zaman kolonial, yaitu Djembatan Panoes "Riwayatmu Kini". Terakhir, adalah Dalam Kotak, Di Dalam Tralis, sebuah video yang sangat eksperimentatif mengenai visual dan realitas. Sebagian besar video ini memperlihatkan kedekatan partisipan terhadap ruang lingkup hidupnya: stasiun kereta.

Jatiwangi is one of the districts in the Majalengka Regency, endowed with soil that is highly suitable for making roof tiles and ceramics. Since the 1930's, Jatiwangi has been the biggest producer of raw materials for the ceramic industry. Hundreds of factories existing there-whether big, medium, or small-are producing roof tiles and ceramics, making the town dwellers much dependent on the weather. The area once housed the Jatiwangi sugar factory, which is now defunct. There is a rumor going on that the old sugar factory would be torn down to make way for a mall. One of the dreams that the people of Jatiwangi keep talking about today is that the International Sukani Airport would be built there.
Jatiwangi adalah salah satu kecamatan yang berada di Kabupaten Majalengka, dan memiliki unsur tanah yang cocok untuk bahan baku pembuatan atap (genteng) dan keramik. Sejak 1930-an, Jatiwangi adalah penghasil tanah untuk bahan baku keramik terbesar hingga saat ini. Ratusan perusahaan, baik besar, menengah dan kecil, mayoritas adalah penghasil genteng dan keramik. Sebuah bisnis yang membuat masyarakatnya sangat bergantung pada cuaca. Daerah ini juga pernah memiliki pabrik gula Jatiwangi yang kini sudah tidak beroperasi lagi. Isu yang beredar di masyarakat, pabrik tersebut akan dihancurkan untuk pembangunan mall. Salah satu mimpi Jatiwangi yang terus dibicarakan masyarakat saat ini, adalah akan dibangunnya Lapangan Udara Internasional Sukani.
The workshop in Jatiwangi took place on April 9 to 15, 2007, in collaboration with the Jatiwangi Art Factory community (JAF), established since September 2005 with diverse art activities, starting from music to visual art. The workshop involved the community and the workers from the roof tile factories. The OK. Video Militia workshop is also one of the ways taken by the Jatiwangi Art Factory to develop the audiovisual media for empowering the people.
Workshop di Jatiwangi berlangsung pada 9-15 April 2007. Bekerjasama dengan komunitas Jatiwangi Art Factory (JAF) yang berdiri sejak September 2005 dengan kegiatan kesenian yang sangat beragam mulai musik sampai senirupa. Workshop ini melibatkan masyarakat setempat dan para pekerja genteng pada pabrik-pabrik. Workshop OK. Video Militia ini juga merupakan salah satu cara JAF untuk mengembangkan media audio-visual demi pemberdayaan masyarakat.
Seven participants joined the workshop at Jatiwangi, producing eight video works, among others: Jebor, a music video with the images from the roof tile-making processes; JTW: "Ternyata Ada" (JTW: "Turns Out that It Exists"), a video work in two parts-Jakarta Kalah Pagi (Jakarta Missed Out) and Pabrik Gula (Sugar Factory). There is also two video performances works, Panda Mencuri Genteng (Panda Stealing Roof tile), whose basic idea was about a surveillance camera that 'catches red-handedly' someone stealing roof tiles. Sagala Dipacok (All Pecked) uses photography stills about the daily lives of the people living in Jatiwangi. Anu Bade Dongkap (One That's Arriving) is a play using traditional tools of roof tile makers, which make musical sounds. Oyes is a video on the break for the workers; CBSA (short for 'Active Learning Methods') is a criticism towards the bureaucracy of education in Jatiwangi; and Bang-bang is a video on the attitude of the youth of Jatiwangi toward their town.
Workshop di Jatiwangi diikuti oleh tujuh orang peserta dan menghasilkan delapan video, antara lain; Jebor, karya video musik dengan visualisasi proses pembuatan genteng. JTW: "Ternyata Ada", sebuah video yang terbagi dalam dua bagian, 'Jakarta Kalah Pagi' dan 'Pabrik Gula'. Dihasilkan pula dua video performance yaitu Panda Mencuri Genteng dengan ide dasar berupa berupa kamera pengintai yang 'menangkap' seseorang mencuri genteng. Video Sagala Dipacok menggunakan still foto tentang keseharian masyarakat Jatiwangi. Anu Bade Dongkap adalah sebuah permainan dengan menggunakan alat tradisional pembuat genteng yang menghasilkan suara-suara musikal. Oyes, video tentang istirahat pekerja; CBSA, kritik terhadap birokrasi pendidikan di Jatiwangi; dan Bang-bang, video tentang sikap anak-anak Jatiwangi terhadap keadaan kotanya kini.

The town's motto is 'Si Tou Timou Tumou Tou', a philosophy of live of the Minahasan people made popular by Sam Ratulangi and means 'Humans live to empower others'. Some words in the Manado dialect originate from the colonizers, i.e. the Dutch and the Portuguese. Manado has nowadays become more popular due to the mushrooming malls and restaurants built along the north-south axis, benefiting from the beautiful view of its coast.
Motto kota ini adalah Si Tou Timou Tumou Tou, sebuah filsafat hidup masyarakat Minahasa yang dipopulerkan oleh Sam Ratulangi yang berarti: "Manusia hidup untuk memajukan orang lain.". Beberapa kata dalam dialek Manado berasal dari bekas penjajah mereka, yaitu Belanda dan Portugis. Akhir-akhir ini Manado terkenal dengan semakin menjamurnya mall dan restoran yang dibangun di jalur utara-selatan memanfaatkan pemandangan pantainya yang indah.
The OK. Video Militia in Manado took place with the collaboration between ruangrupa and the Multi Media Manado Community (KOMED). This community is one of the motors for the short and documentary film productions. KOMED's activists produce short films and documentary movies about social issues. The community is actively involved with the community of short-film-makers in Indonesia.
Workshop OK. Video Militia di Manado terlaksana atas kerjasama ruangrupa dengan Komunitas Multi Media Manado (KOMED). Komunitas ini merupakan salah satu penggerak perkembangan film pendek dan dokumenter di sini. Aktivitas KOMED adalah memproduksi film dokumenter tentang persoalan-persoalan sosial dan film pendek. Komunitas ini aktif bekerjasama dengan jaringan komunitas pembuat film pendek di Indonesia.
Eleven participants joined the workshop in Manado, producing three works entitled Mikro, documentary video about the public minibuses that always play music; Asongan (Peddlers), a documentary video about a hand phone peddler; Portal, a video on boundary and power.
Workshop di Manado diikuti oleh 11 orang partisipan dan menghasilkan 3 karya yang berjudul: Mikro, video dokumenter tentang angkutan umum yang selalu memutar musik; Asongan, video dokumenter tentang pedagang handphone keliling; Portal, video tentang sebuah perbatasan dan kekuasaan.

The city of education is the capital of the Province of West Sumatra, where the ethnic group of Minangkabau forms the majority of the people. Situated on the west coast of Sumatra, directly facing the Indian Ocean, Padang is the center of business and the artery of the area. The Minangkabauan community is renowned for their culture of travel and also their culinary delights, and the most interesting aspect of their culture is the traditions of speaking in proverbs and sayings, an ancient tradition of giving advices to the people using proverbs and saying with moral contents.
Kota pendidikan ini adalah ibukota Provinsi Sumatra Barat, dengan mayoritas penduduk adalah etnis Minangkabau. Terletak di sisi barat Sumatera dan berhadapan langsung dengan Samudera Hindia, Padang adalah pusat bisnis dan urat nadi wilayah ini. Masyarakat Minang sangat terkenal dengan budaya merantau dan kulinernya, dan yang paling menarik adalah tradisi petatah-petitih, sebuah tradisi tua dalam menasihati masyarakat dengan kiasan kata-kata dengan muatan moral.
The workshop of OK. Video Militia in Padang was conducted in collaboration with the Belanak Art Community, Padang. The members of this community are young artists from the Padang State University. They try to present alternative art within the developments of the art in South Sumatra, by holding exhibitions, workshop, and researches. The workshop this time involved nineteen participants consisting of art students, artists, and short-movie activists.
Workshop OK. Video Milita di Padang bekerjasama dengan Komunitas Seni Belanak-Padang. Anggota komunitas ini adalah para seniman muda dari Universitas Negeri Padang. Mereka mencoba menghadirkan senirupa alternatif dalam perkembangan senirupa Sumatra Barat dengan melakukan pameran, workshop dan riset. Workshop kali ini melibatkan sembilanbelas partisipan yang terdiri atas mahasiswa senirupa, seniman, dan pegiat film pendek.
The works produced in the week-long workshop are truly diverse, with a strong local content. This is obvious in the video Manapiak Aia di Dulang Tapaciak Muko Surang. The video is a non-metaphorical visualization about the Minangkabauan proverb which means 'It's an ill bird that fouls its own nest.' Then there is the video work of Listrik (Electricity) that presents criticism in a way that is highly typical of the Minang culture about the bureaucracy and public services at the State Electrical Company. Meanwhile, the video works of Asbak (Ashtray) and Redam (Muffled) try to explore the visual possibilities in videos using camera frames. Visual realities are manipulated to become a new dimension.
Karya yang dihasilkan dalam seminggu workshop ini sangat beragam dengan muatan lokal yang kental. Dalam video Manapiak Aia di Dulang Tapaciak Muko Surang, hal ini sangat terlihat. Video ini merupakan visualisasi tanpa metafor tentang pribahasa Minang; Menapik Air di Dulang, Terpercik Muka Sendiri. Kemudian ada video Listrik yang mengkritik dengan cara sangat khas minang tentang birokrasi dan pelayanan publik pada Perusahan Listrik Negara (PLN). Sementara video Asbak dan Redam mencoba mengeksplorasi kemungkinan visual dalam video melalu frame kamera. Realitas visual dimanipulasi menjadi dimensi yang baru.

After the 1998 Reformation, the Province of Riau was divided into two distinct administrative parts: the Province of Riau Islands, and the Province of Riau. Pekanbaru is the capital of the Province of Riau, having the Minangkabauans, Malays, and Chinese as the majority ethnic groups. During the era of regional autonomy, the region became one of the richest provinces in Indonesia, as it is the biggest crude oil producer in Indonesia. This has turned Pekanbaru into the largest business and services developments region on Sumatra today. One of the dreams of the city leaders is to turn Pekanbaru into a 'City of a Million Shop-Houses'. The city is also a transit area for job-seekers before they go to Malaysia and Singapore. Besides, with the growth of the manufacture and plantation industries, the existence of immigrants from Java and other parts of Sumatra has made the city, lying as it is on the equator, a multiethnic city.
Setelah reformasi 1998 Provinsi Riau berubah menjadi dua wilayah yaitu Provinsi Kepulauan Riau dan Provinsi Riau. Pekanbaru adalah ibu kota Provinsi Riau dengan etnis mayoritas adalah Minang, Melayu, dan Cina. Pada era otonomi daerah, wilayah ini berubah menjadi salah satu provinsi terkaya di Indonesia karena Riau adalah penghasil minyak mentah terbesar di Indonesia, menjadikan Pekanbaru sebagai kawasan pengembangan bisnis dan jasa terbesar di Sumatra saat ini. Salah satu cita-cita pemimpin kota ini adalah menjadikan Pekanbaru menjadi Kota Sejuta Ruko (rumah toko). Kota ini juga menjadi wilayah transit ke Malaysia dan Singapura bagi para pencari kerja. Selain itu dengan berkembangnya industri manufaktur dan perkebunan, keberadaan para pendatang dari Pulau Jawa dan beberapa daerah Sumatra menyebabkan kota di garis Khatulistiwa ini menjadi kota multietnis.
The OK. Video Militia workshop in Pekanbaru was held at Labor Vocational School, which tries to develop vocational skills starting from the level of high school. The school has quite comprehensive audio-video facilities. What is also very interesting is that the school has developed the Labschool TV, a community television station focusing on the issue of education. Ten participants joined the week-long video workshop held at the school, consisting of teachers, students, university students from the department of communication, and artists.
Workshop OK. Video Militia di Pekanbaru dilaksanakan di SMK Labor ––sekolah kejuruan yang mengembangkan keahlian profesi dari tingkat sekolah menengah. Sekolah ini mempunyai fasilitas audio-video yang cukup lengkap. Selain itu yang paling menarik adalah: SMK Labor Pekanbaru telah mengembangkan LABSCHOOL TV, sebuah stasiun televisi komunitas yang fokus pada masalah pendidikan. Workshop video selama satu minggu di sekolah ini diikuti oleh sepuluh partisipan yang terdiri atas guru, siswa, mahasiswa jurusan komunikasi, dan seniman.
Within a week, workshop participants produced three works consisting of two works with local themes, i.e. Oplet (Minibuses), a short documentary video about the public transportation in Pekanbaru, and Suap (Bribe), a video about the characteristics of the Malay ethnic group who enjoy being spoon-fed and always want to be served. Then there is also Kaki (Feet), a video on wastes and shoes, which represent the culture and characteristics of a person.
Dalam waktu seminggu, peserta workshop menghasilkan tiga karya yang terdiri atas dua karya dengan tema lokal, yaitu Oplet, video dokumeter pendek tentang angkutan kota di Pekanbaru dan Suap, video mengenai sifat masyarakat Melayu yang suka disuapi dan selalu ingin dilayani, kemudian Kaki, sebuah video tentang sampah dan sepatu yang mewakili budaya dan karakter seseorang.

The 'City of Heroes' is the second-biggest industrial city after Jakarta. The people of Surabaya are renowned for their firm characteristic. Besides the Javanese, the Chinese and other ethnic groups from eastern Indonesia also live in this highly populous city. The people there speak a distinct dialect of Javanese known as 'Boso Suroboyoan' (Surabayan Language), which has no hierarchy of language unlike Javanese in general. The people of Surabaya are known for their egalitarian and open attitude. Before Suharto and his New Order regime took power in 1966, art in the city had been vibrant, especially when it came to the ludruk folk theater which at the time numbered to around four hundreds. At the time, what is left from them is only one folk theater named 'Ludruk Irama Budaya'.
Kota Pahlawan ini adalah kota industri kedua terbesar setelah Jakarta. Masyarakat Surabaya terkenal dengan karakternya yang keras. Selain etnis Jawa, kota dengan tingkat kepadatan yang sangat tinggi ini juga banyak dihuni oleh etnis Cina dan beberapa etnis dari Timur Indonesia. Kota ini memiliki dialek khas bahasa Jawa yang dikenal dengan Boso Suroboyoan, selain itu juga dikenal karena budaya egaliter, blak-blakan, dan tidak mengenal ragam tingkatan bahasa seperti bahasa Jawa pada umumnya. Sebelum Suharto dengan Orde Baru-nya berkuasa pada 1966, kehidupan kesenian rakyat marak di kota ini, terutama teater rakyat ludruk yang saat itu berjumlah hingga empatratusan. Namun, saat ini yang tersisa hanya tinggal satu kelompok ludruk yaitu Ludruk Irama Budaya.
The OK. Video Militia workshop in Surabaya was held in cooperation with Cak Durasim Cultural Park. The art center of East Java has rather adequate facilities to function well as a venue for performances and exhibitions, and is actively holding performances especially for traditional art forms. Cak Durasim Cultural Park has become an accessible public space and an affordable performance venue, facilitating art groups to interact with audiences coming from all levels of the society.
Workshop OK. Video Milita di Surabaya bekerjasama dengan Taman Budaya Surabaya Cak Durasim. Pusat kesenian daerah Jawa Timur ini memiliki fasilitas yang cukup lengkap sebagai tempat pertunjukan dan pameran, dan aktif menggelar pertunjukan terutama untuk kesenian tradisional. Taman Budaya Cak Durasim menjadi ruang publik dan ruang pertunjukan murah yang memfasilitasi kelompok-kelompok seni pertunjukan untuk bereksperimen dengan pengunjung dari berbagai lapisan masyarakat.
The workshop at the Cak Durasim Cultural Park involved six Surabayan artists; most of them have previously worked using the medium of video. In Untitled, Beni Wicaksono tries to transform objects using the camera and video mixer, creating forms that are "out of this world". Then there is Pilih yang Anda Suka (Choose What You Like) by L. Firman Alturizal, which offers ideological options by using signs and symbols within the society. Sehari Langkahku dalam Tiga Menit (My Steps of the Day in Three Minutes) by Antok Agusta is a performance video which tries to view the space from the point of view of the foot. The work of Agus Sam tries to record activities around the house, while Ayu Moblong-Moblong (Extravagantly Pretty) by Agus Kuching, a short documentary video recording the life of the folk theater group of Ludruk Irama Budaya of Surabaya.
Workshop di Taman Budaya Cak Durasim melibatkan enam seniman Surabaya yang sebagian besar telah bersentuhan dan berkarya dengan medium video. Pada video Untitled, Beni Wicaksono mencoba mentransformasi benda-benda melalui kamera dan mixer video menjadi bentuk-bentuk di luar bayangan relitas kita. Ada pula Pilih Yang Anda Suka karya L. Firman Alturizal yang menawarkan pilihan ideologis dengan menggunakan tanda-tanda dan simbol yang ada di tengah masyarakat. Sehari Langkahku Dalam Tiga Menit karya Antok Agusta, adalah video performance yang mencoba melihat ruang dari kaki. Ada karya Agus Sam yang merekam aktivitas kehidupan di sekitar rumah. Kemudian ada Ayu Moblong-Moblong karya Agus Kuching, sebuah video dokumenter pendek yang merekam kehidupan Ludruk Irama Budaya Surabaya.
